I often imagine a cinematic trailer for some video game that doesn't exist except in my mind.
It goes like this:
A man and his wife are driving home during a storm in the middle of the night. The husband who is the driver gets distracted for just a moment, and in that moment they get into a wreck. The man swerved enough to where the wife would be safe for the most part, but he hit his head pretty bad. It was so bad he was put in a comatose state. He would rest in a hospital with his wife sitting by him, worrying.
The man wakes up in a different realm. One inside his own head. He isn't aware that he's in a coma. He doesn't remember anything about the accident. He just knows he was with his wife one moment, and the next he's here.
Now where is here? It's a realm split in two. Light and darkness rule the same space. The light being people, innocent creatures, and all the structures in a city they've created. To stave off the darkness, the massive structures people made have large spotlights hanging from all the ceilings and walls and roofs. The more important structures stand over the other buildings and have much more powerful and more plentiful lights. The lower you go the darker it gets. The poorest districts have the most dim lights, and often rely on candles or bonfires. They take turns sleeping so that the light is always maintained.
If the darkness makes it through, people get taken, never to be seen again. Screams echo and die out, and you never hear another sound except for the howling of the wind.
In this realm there is one overlord, and punishment for mutiny is severe, and often it means forcing them to live the rest of their life on the outskirts.
((Okay so in the trailer there isn't time to explain all this, it just kind of shows everything in a very easy to understand way, prob won't even show the tyrant.))
He finds a mirror that shows him where he is in the real world, laying in a bed with his wife crying over him. He realizes he needs to get back to the real world. He asks people for help, teams up with someone who makes inventions, learns that the only door out is deep in the darkness where the shadows thrive.
The inventor shows the man how the butterflies in this world produce light, and when contained in special crystals they can surround the user in light. However, travelling through the darkness with this light was never tested. People were too fearful and didn't want to risk everything if they didn't need to.
However, this man had no choice. He knew he wouldn't be on that hospital bed forever, eventually they'd pull the plug on him and all would be lost.
The ending of this story is also in my mind, in this cinematic trailer in my head. Skipping all the adventure and story I could spoil it right here... I don't think I should though. I think I should at least try to write a novel. 200 pages long? Maybe something even longer? I don't know....
